As best as I can recollect, the Desoto County Gun Club was formed in the late 1950’s. It was put together by Larry Lawerence, an employee of F.P.L and a Local Gunsmith. I was one of the original members and there were about 10 people in all.
Larry secured permission to use some land at the old clay pits east of Nocatee and that was our range for several years. The county then decided to use that property for a landfill and we were forced to locate somewhere else.
Larry found the current property that is now the range and we leased it from Louie Morgan for $1 a year. After M. Morgan passed away, he left instructions that we were to have 1st chance to purchase the land.
I was president and we had it surveyed and got the loan from the Desoto National Bank. I believe that was in the 1970’s. H.L. Lawrence was president for many, many years.
